Swedish Massage is a classic form of relaxation massage. Its primary benefit is to relax the entire body. This is achieved via a range of specially formulated techniques including; effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, frictions and vibrations. Each of these techniques works towards the direction of the heart to encourage blood flow and improve flexibility.
As well as relaxation, Swedish massage also helps to increase the levels of oxygen in the blood, flushes out waste and toxins, improving the body’s circulation and movement.
Interestingly, a study conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and published in The New York Times, has shown that one treatment can have a significant impact on the levels of the stress hormone ‘cortisol’. It found that volunteers in the study had a significant decline in the hormone following a Swedish massage.
Other benefits experienced during the study include; an increase in lymphocytes – white blood cells that structure the immune system and also a surge in immune cells, which help to fight of infections.
